Today I completed my designs for the cover of Polluto, the anti-pop culture Journal.

Issue 8 will be an intriguing take on Sci-fi and these are my illustrations.

So here we are at the end of our degree and its exhibition time.

I was lucky enough to win the
Sylvia Dowsett Memorial Award
for Illustration 2011

The exhibition was a wonderful chance to see the looks on children's faces as they explored through my book, spotting the lizards, fish and birds.

Our exhibition incuded a communial wall that was
filled by all years of our Illustration course.

This image was part of a one day projects set by the visiting illustrator supermundane who loves to work with image and typography. We were asked to incorporate our name in to an illustration and this is my result.

Starting at 6 am we began to brightened up Hereford for the summer. The boards surrounding the reminisce of the devastating fire had become a place for dismal doodles and with permission from the mayor we injected some imaginative colour. It’s the last day of term and it’s gone with a bang!

I’ve managed to complete two live briefs this term with both being very successful.

The First was commissioned by Joyce Clare where she wanted illustrations for her self published book of poetry. This Project was open to all years in the illustration department of Hereford College of Arts and everyone got hands on. There were 21 poems that needed illustrating and with many versions to choose from Joyce picked her favourites.

Below is a front cover that I put together which is a constructed of snippets taken from almost every piece of work entered in to this competitive project.

Overall I submitted 5 illustrations and these are the two that got in. For a better quality image look further down my blog.

This is the Hereford College of Arts Christmas card design that I saw being printed today in the hundreds. It was a wonderful experience seeing the different processes and the colossal lithograph printer. On the final printed design there are a few other small adjustments but I'll post a picture of the final card soon I have a few on the press for my self.

Snorkeling in the Indian Ocean

This was based on my experience in the Seychelles where i spent most days snorkeling with my underwater camera, chasing fish in the colourful Indian ocean.

Logans Rock post card

I had a wonderful evening camping on Logan's rock in Cornwall and it was beautiful.
This post card shows my adventure starting with the beautiful views turning in to a sparkling night where I meet a mouse. To waking up with a spider on my face and then the long long journey home walking along the coast and then hitchhiking the rest of the way to Penzance train station.

Seychelles Post Card

Gouache painted postcard of the Vally de Mai on the island of Pralin. The Valely de Mai is a national trust rain forest and it is one of the only place in the world left where you will find the Coco De Mer Palm plus many more species. The wonderful thing about the Coco De mer is that its female coconut resembles a woman's bum and is the largest seed in the world. The male palms have a long... catkin like flower. These palms live between 200 and 400 years and grow very slowly so the need to be looked after. The Valley de Mai is also home to colourful wildlife like gekkos, tree frogs,giant snails, birds of paradise, and the infamous black parrot.

A Night in the Woods

These Images are from my very first finished children's pure picture book with no words.Its painted with gouache and describes the adventure of a young girl through the woods and she stumbles upon some astonishing events. This book is there to help enhance the child's imagination and confidence, where the child can sit and tell the adult a story or even sit on there own and be able to understand the whole story but also still be noticing more and more every time the book is opened.

I have submitted this book to the Macmillan Children's Book Competition and also i bounded a hard back copy for my colleges Book Arts competition.

This is my favourite out of all 4 as i think the collage characters fit in with the photograph better than the painted ones. This is digitally composed from a variety of images as i was trying to get the most focused parts of my theater together in one image.

The Dark Room

I took some photos of my theater with my film camera. I like how dramatic the lighting is and i'm hoping to get back in to the dark room and develop more of these as i want bring them in to photoshop for some collaging.
This photo is of Hereford river over flowing on to the park off in to the distance. It was taken at twilight and I love the reflecting lights and trees.

This Photo was me playing with creating dynamic lights and textures in my photos.

The local Ironmongers with all their signs and clutter in the window. I found this very appealing and i think it makes this photo interesting to keep looking at.

A contact sheet showing my twilight explorations of Hereford. Lots of these photos lack much interest but theres some wonderful dynamics of lighting through out.

A contact sheet showing my adventures to Leominster where I'd taken photos of interesting shop fronts and inside an abandoned weaving house. There was wool everywhere and i think these images would be fantastic blown up. The other half of this contact sheet are of my theaters and pop up books but i don't think very many are worth blowing up. I'm going to take another films worth of photos primarily of my theaters and experiment more the the lighting and exposure.

Light Up Theater

The theater is about 11 inches wide and is made mostly out of card and paper, delicately decorated along the way. I've used beads and fabric to add texture. The two side theaters are made in the same way my magic lantern show was made, by using cut out silhouettes. The lights behind them twinkle and change where they're shining from making the images jolt and dance. Now I want to have a play with adding characters, digitally and using cut outs like in my pop up books. I'm pleased with the way this has turned out and the photos let you really get inside this little world.
